Top Eight Title Tag Tips

Your title tag could truly mean whether or not people are able to find your website. Yes, it's that important.

In simple terms, a title tag becomes the official title of your website page, describing what your page is about. It tells search engines and end users what they will read on your page. It appears at the very top of your page above the address bar and is the title in search engine results.

Consider these top 8 title tag tips

  1. Emphasize keywords and phrases that a user would type into a search engine. Common sense is a good place to start, but keyword research may help you bring your title tags to the next level.
  2. If your time is limited, focus on writing title tags for the homepage and your top five most important pages. It would be worthwhile to carefully write title tags for all of your pages if you can find the time.
  3. Create a title tag that effectively communicates the topic of the page's content. Include keywords that are also used within the page content.
  4. Use brief but descriptive titles. Titles should be both short and informative.
  5. Title tags are not sentences, and therefore, do not need to be grammatically correct.
  6. Feel free to use the pipe (|), comma (,) and the hyphen (-) characters to separate phrases and words.
  7. Using geographical words such as city and/or state is a great idea.
  8. Title tags should be different on all pages. This helps search engines know how the page is distinct from the others on your site.
